ROOIBOS & HONEYBUSH
SPECIALITIES FROM SOUTH AFRIC A
Rooibos (red bush) is the popular national drink of South Africa.
It is naturally caffeine-free. With its natural sweetness, rooibos
is a real treat both pure and flavoured. Rooibos grows exclusively
in the Cederberg region of South Africa’s Cape Province and is
harvested between January and May. The natural fermentation
begins as soon as the harvested “brooms” are cut and pressed
and the cell juice seeps out. During fermentation, the rooibos
takes on its typical bright copper-red-brown colour and acquires
its full-bodied flavour.
Green rooibos is not fermented. Its taste is fruity, mild and not
sweet, with a slightly tart note.
Honeybush grows in the southeastern Cape region from Darling
to Port Elizabeth and is harvested all year round. It has the same
characteristics as rooibos, is also naturally caffeine-free, but is
generally considered to be even more full-bodied. Its finely fruity,
sweet and honey-like taste is finding more and more followers.

Important preparation advice for your customers:
Always infuse herbs, fruits and rooibos as well as their blends only with freshly boiling water and let them steep for at least 5 to 8
minutes. That is the only way to obtain a safe food.
