Black Teas
CEYLON
Around Adam’s Peak are the six tea-growing regions of Sri Lanka
(still called Ceylon in tea circles). The most important teas come
from the highlands of Dimbula, Uva and Nuwara Eliya and grow
at altitudes of about 1,200 to 1,800 metres. The teas from the
highlands are particularly sought after because the slow growth
of the tea leaves produces a particularly fine and intense flavour.
Ceylon teas are characterised by a fresh, medium-strong, slightly
tart and malty flavour, sometimes reminiscent of citrus fruit.
The teas from the western growing region of Dimbula have a
fine, round character. The best qualities are harvested here from
January to March. The top teas from the highlands of Uva are
strong and full-bodied and are harvested from July to September.
The Nuwara Eliya district, a high plateau between Dimbula
and Uva, produces the finest and best Ceylon teas. These are
harvested all year round and have a rather delicate, almost floral
flavour.
